French farmers have a bad reputation in Europe, but as the 2010 sees further drops in their revenues it’s hard not to sympathise. 2008 and 2009 saw revenue fall by over 15% in two successive years with dairy farmers particularly badly hit. Aid packages have been promised by the French government; however many French farmers are seeking alternative ways of farming and are turning to organic agriculture as a result.
World Milk Prices
Prices for all categories of agricultural produce have tumbled since 2008, but milk prices in particular have suffered. A boom in the industry prior to 2008 was seem by economists even then as unsustainable; with the subsequent recession came falling demand just as supply reached an all time high, causing prices to go into freefall.
Others causes have also been identified, though how much influence to accord to these factors is unclear. Food Renegade has cited a glut of milk protein concentrates into the market, largely originating from China and the east, that have replaced milk in foods like cheese; Bangor Times has blamed broken and inefficient pricing systems and corruption in dairy cooperatives.
