Westfield's opening of a brand-new mega mall in London's west on October 30 might come at an unexpected time – is there any demand really? Whoever is left with enough spending power and appetite for fashion, homeware and jewellery, will welcome what Westfield is offering in White City just in time for the Christmas shopping. While the western world wonders how to brave recession fears, the supersize shopping center is confident to lure its customers by its sheer size, lots of bling – and even some green credentials.
Westfield London in Facts and Figures
- The retail area is 150000 m² (1.615m ft²) big and 99 % are already let.
- Westfield London cost 1.6 billion GBP (about 2,5 billion USD) to build.
- There are 265 shops on 5 levels, which are connected over 96 escalators.
- The Village will feature 40 top fashion labels in glamorous boutique style, from Louis Vuitton to Prada.
- Of course there will be shops from the ever present high street chains like Hennes & Mauritz, Zara, Monsoon and TopShop.
- 16 brands represented are new to the UK.
- Department stores include Debenhams, Marks & Spencers, Next and House of Fraser.
- Some customers will appreciate special services like valet parking, personal shop assistants, ahnds-free shopping and home delivery.
- The Southern Terrace features 17 restaurants and cafés mostly open till late in the evening, while The Balcony offers all kinds of food at 13 different counters. 4 more restaurants at The Loft advertise their family-friendly services. With additional takeaway shops Westfield offers close to 50 eateries.
- While the central Atrium has the size of a football pitch, the Southern Terrace is 300 metres long and the malls are 16 metres wide.
- Fitness studio, spa and cinema will also be opening in the Westfield complex in 2009. A library is aimed to serve the local community.
- To satisfy christmas shoppers' needs for extended hours Westfield is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. And 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Christmas. The last week before Christmas shops will be open even till 11 p.m. from Monday to Friday.
Green Credentials and Public Transport
- This does sound like a huge carbon footprint – but proprietors claim to have used up to 50 % of recycled materials in the construction material and to have reduced emissions by 24 %. Other green efforts include solar power, rainwater harvesting, waste separation and recycling.
- There are parking lots for 4500 cars and bays for 570 bicycles.
- Public transport is the easiest way to get here: Shepherd's Bush and White City on the Central Line and Shepherd's Bush Market and Wood Lane on the Hammersmith and City Line rpovide easy access. A new National Railway overground station will be opened and numerous bus lines stop at the soon to be finished White City bus station.
- Westfield London is the third-biggest shopping mall in the UK after MetroCentre (Gateshead, North East England) and Bluewater (Kent). Up to now Centrale in Croydon was London's biggest shopping center.
- Westfield is hoping to attract over 20 million customers per year.
